JOHN MORRISON RETIRES FROM AASA

The Chairperson of the Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA), Dr Peter Chikumba (also the Chief Executive of Air Zimbabwe), has announced the retirement at the end of last month of John Morrison, former Chief Executive of the association.

Since  March 1, when John Morrison retired as Chief Executive, and Chris Zweigenthal was appointed as his successor, Morrison has fulfilled the role as director of AASA, concentrating on important strategic projects of importance to AASA’s members.

“John Morrison, who was chief executive of the association since 1992, fulfilled his role with distinction, raising the profile of the Association to a position where it has become recognised as the most authoritative and respected voice of the South and Southern African Airline industry”, said Dr Chikumba.

Morrison has had a distinguished career in aviation for nearly fifty years, being the founder and owner of several South African and Regional airlines, notably Airlink, Magnum Air, United Air, Protea Airways, Air Malawi, Air Botswana and Swazi Air before concentrating on consulting and working for the Airlines Association.  He has also served on the Boards of other airlines and aviation related companies.

“It has been a privilege for me to have worked with John Morrison over the past eight years.  He has created a legacy of high performance and proactive response to industry issues, and I have learned an enormous amount from him,” said Chris Zweigenthal. “His passion and drive to contribute and make a significant difference for AASA’s members and in the interests of the airline industry in general, is an enormous example to all of us.

“He leaves a legacy of which he can be justly proud and we have a responsibility to continue promoting airline interests in all fields,” added Zweigenthal
