Parys Wings and Wheels, 17 April 2010

A fun day not to be missed

The annual Parys Wings and Wheels Mini Air Show and Veteran Car Show will be held on Saturday 17 April at Parys Airfield and promises to be a true festival of fun. 2010 marks the fifth year in which this popular event will be hosted by the Parys Flying Club and the Koepel Dome Motor Club and this year a turn-out of about 5,000 visitors is expected.

Apart from a huge variety of aircraft and veteran cars and motorcycles, there will be a huge flea market offering anything from food and tasty treats, to clothing, jewellery, furniture and lots more. The little ones are also being catered for through jumping castles, ponies and a miniature train that will take children on regular joy rides.

For the more adventurous, quad rides will be available while Suzuki Auto South Africa is also bringing their exciting Suzuki Acceleration Series event to Parys – this takes the form of a gymkhana track on which participants race against the clock to post the quickest times – the winner on the day will be invited to take part in the national finals to be held in Gauteng towards the end of the year. Also on the motoring side is a parade of veteran cars and motorcycles while a 400 horsepower Wright Whirlwind 9-cylinder radial engine will be started at regular intervals.

The main attraction of Parys Wings and Wheels will undoubtedly be the mini air show and for this year spectators can expect to be thrilled by Harvards, Pitts Specials, other aerobatic aircraft as well as paragliders, skydivers and a microlight display team doing their thing. Well-known aviator Scully Levin will provide the thrill of the day when he lands his Piper Cub aircraft on top of a moving truck!

Aviation and air shows are not just about spectacular flying and dazzling machines. None of this is possible without a positive attitude towards aviation safety and adherence to rules, regulations and safe practices. Parys Flying Club has therefore decided to introduce a new initiative at Wings and Wheels 2010, namely a mass start-up and shut-down of the 100 plus aircraft expected at this year’s event. This cacophony of sound will not only mark the opening of the mini air show, but is also done to focus attention on aviation safety and as a mark of respect and remembrance to all aviators who unfortunately had to undertake their last flight to the big hanger in the sky. All of this will of course be happening under the careful direction of a Safety Officer and Air Traffic Controllers.

So there you have it – do not miss out on Parys Wings and Wheels on 17 April. For more information contact Francois van Eeden on 072 342 0315 or Pierre Boulogne on 082 686 7209.
