THE GRAND RAND - Mark Mansfield reports

THIS YEAR’S Rand Air Show held at Rand Airport, Germiston, recently will go down in the record books as one of the biggest events of its kind in South Africa. The crowd of over 27 000 people were once again entertained by South Africa’s finest aerobatic pilots and display teams.

The Rand Air Show has always been known for its fast-pace style and constant aerobatic displays, and this year was no exception as the skies above Rand Airport were filled with smoke and all shapes and sizes of various aircraft, from the nimblest Microlight snake formation team, to the largest commercial jet, Phoebus Apollo’s’ DC-9 and a Fokker F28 from AirQuarius which made is debut air show appearance.

Included in the show line up were the SAAF Silver Falcons, the Goodyear Eagles Pitt Special aerobatic team, the Gabriel Pitt Specials aerobatic team, as well as displays from the Master Power Technologies’ Bell 407 helicopter and a host of other solo displays such as the Mazda Zlin, SU26 and a Yak 55.

The grand finale of the show was again a massive wall of fire created by CC Pocock with Harvard’s simulating a bombing run. The show was sponsored by Master Power Technologies as well AirQuarius. Capital Sounds provided the commentary and as always Brian Emmenis was in top form. This year is a special one for Capital Sounds, as it celebrates its 25th anniversary in the broadcast industry.
