THE SOUTH African air show season got off to a flying start recently with the first event being hosted by the Middelburg Aero Club. This was not only the season debut, but was also the first where Capital Sounds boasted its new sponsorship with National Airways Corporation (NAC).

“This is perfect timing,” said Brian Emmenis, CEO and sole owner of Capital Sounds. “This is a perfect synergy between NAC and Capital Sounds, as we celebrate 25 years of broadcast excellence.” Tracy Porter, marketing and public relations manager, said: “For NAC, our partnership with Capital Sounds confirms our commitment to bringing aviation to the people, as well as our commitment to general aviation.” Once again, the over 8 000-strong crowd was entertained by the Harvard Flying Lions, Goodyear Eagles Pitt Specials, Gabriel Pitt Specials, as well as the Suzuki Slick 360.

Not to be outdone by the formation teams, the solo displays by CC Pocock from Bush Air flying his Cessna T41 had the large crowd on their feet with his impressive flying skills and demonstrating the capabilities of his Cessna. On the fast jet side, the venerable Impala and L39 jets thrilled the crowd with their aerobatics. Forming part of the solo displays was the Mazda Zlin performing an inverted ribbon cut, and a water bombing demonstration by the crop dusters. On the helicopter side, the crowds witnessed how agile the Robinson R22 and R44 really are.

Another first for the Middelburg air show was a R10 000 prize sponsored by HR City and Pegusas, awarded for the best flying display, as voted by the crowd and panel of judges. After a full day of flying displays, the prize was unanimously awarded to Danie Terblanche flying a jaw dropping helicopter display in his Robinson R22, close on his heels was the display flown by CC Pocock from Bush Air in his Cessna T41. For the non-aviation enthusiasts, Suzuki Auto stepped to the plate and offered the chance to test drive one of its SUVs on a specially designed off-road track on the airfield. This is going to be an ongoing highlight at air shows. The success of the Middelburg air show must be attributed to the show organisers as well as all the major sponsors; HR City, Pegusas and Suzuki for their endless commitment to aviation.
